Philodendron Verrucosum 'Angel'
A named cultivar selection of Philodendron verrucosum is distinguished from the standard species by a more compact, upright, and uniform growth habit that makes it a particularly practical and well-behaved collector plant without sacrificing any of the foliar character that makes verrucosum so widely coveted. The leaves carry the full verrucosum signature: large, broadly heart-shaped, deeply velvety, rich dark green with lighter green primary venation creating clear contrast across the matte surface, and carried on the characteristic bristly, hairy petioles that are one of the most immediately tactilely distinctive features of the species — densely covered in soft reddish-green trichomes that give each stem a distinctly fuzzy, almost caterpillar-like quality. New leaves emerge in warm coppery-green tones before deepening to the rich velvety dark green of maturity, and the abaxial undersides carry a reddish-purple flush that adds a two-tone character visible on every leaf. The 'Angel' selection's more compact, controlled constitution makes it a particularly rewarding choice for growers with limited vertical space or those who want the full verrucosum experience in a more manageable form.
-
Light: Bright indirect light for the deepest velvet coloration and most vigorous growth; verrucosum is more light-sensitive than many collector philodendrons — avoid direct sun which bleaches the dark velvet surface.
-
Soil: Chunky, well-draining aroid mix of orchid bark, perlite, and coco coir; moisture-retentive but never waterlogged — excellent drainage essential.
-
Temperature/Humidity: Cool to warm temperatures between 60-78°F; high humidity of 70-80% is non-negotiable — one of the more humidity-demanding philodendrons, with leaf edge browning the first symptom of insufficient moisture in the air.
-
Watering: Allow the top inch of medium to approach dryness between waterings; water thoroughly and drain completely. Consistent moisture without waterlogging is the target.
-
Fertilizer: Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer every 4 weeks during active growth; supplement with calcium and magnesium for best leaf quality. Reduce in winter.
